| + | *Ambiguously Gay Trio: Obviously, this is Phoenix, Edgeworth, and Larry. They were friends back when they were nine, and their fates have become linked as adults. This means they're all fucking each other. Also, this is not in the least bit ambiguous. | ||
| + | |||
| + | *But You're Just a Kid!: Cody Hackins is a kid, yes, but Maya talks down to him like she's not a kid herself. Also, when he's a witness in Will Powers's trial, everyone treats him like a fragile flower, like he's going to be irreparably damaged by Phoenix's cross-examination. Well, that part might be true. | ||

| + | *CHIIIIIIIIICKS: Oh my God, Larry Butz. In this game alone, he supposedly has two girlfriends, both models. One is suspiciously absent and the other is conveniently dead before the game begins. He clumsily and unsuccessfully hits on both Mia and Maya. Larry almost seems to buy his own cover story, but no one else does. From hard evidence presented in the game, he's clearly fucking both Phoenix and Edgeworth. | ||
| + | |||
| + | *He Could Be My Friend, If He Weren't My Enemy: This one is easy. Phoenix and Edgeworth, although on opposite sides of the courtroom, are actually buddies. Butt buddies. The entire game revolves around their love/hate/bone relationship. | ||
| + | |||
| + | *I'm a Pedophile and It's Okay!: Manfred von Karma is a horrifying pedo, based solely on his character design. In this game, anyway. Also, various characters like to hit on the underage Maya. | ||
| + | |||
| + | *PENIS: Most of the items in Phoenix's evidence sack are undeniably phallic. There are also actual penises in this game, most of them on naked statues in Redd White's office. Don't forget the Samurai Wieners or naked Thinker clock, both of which are Larry's masterpieces. | ||
| + | |||
| + | *Shitty Voice Acting: There isn't much voice acting, except for the courtroom phrases like "Objection!" and "Hold It!" Even so, we know that Phoenix has a total girl voice, Winston Payne sounds like a muppet on speed, and Von Karma sounds like Satan from South Park. | ||
| + | |||
| + | *That Was a Busy Year: Fifteen years ago, almost all this game's backstory happened. Phoenix, Larry, and Edgeworth became friends. Edgeworth's dad was murdered. Marvin Grossberg sold out Misty Fey and became a blackmail target of Redd White. Misty Fey's reputation was ruined, and she abandoned Mia and Maya. And that's not all! But we're not there in the recaps yet, so stay tuned. | ||
| + | |||
| + | *The Asylum King: Most witnesses, especially the ones guilty of murder, tend to totally lose their shit on the stand when Phoenix uncovers their filthy lies. Each one of these meltdowns has an accompanying over-the-top animation sequence. For a more literal interpretation, there is the "nameless" old man witness/murderer in the fourth case who puts on a crazy act that nearly drives Phoenix, Maya, and Sam crazy themselves. | ||
| + | |||
| + | *The Unsinkable Ship: Phoenix and Edgeworth! The deep, penetrating connection between these two is the very foundation of the recaps -- and the game! | ||
| + | |||
| + | *Too Dumb to Live: Where to start? Because the various plots are so full of holes, the game designers had to dumb down the entire cast in order for everything to hold together. In particular: | ||
| + | **Phoenix Wright: He is incredibly stupid, even by this game's standards. Although he supposedly graduated from law school, he's never read any law books and knows nothing about evidence, testimony, or cross-examination when the game begins. Other people constantly win his cases for him, including Edgeworth, the prosecutor. He likes to confront murderers in private without any backup while holding the only piece of evidence that proves their guilt. Despite all this, in the game universe he is considered a legal genius. | ||
| + | **The Judge: He is canon stupid. I'm not sure if he's supposed to be senile due to his extreme old age, or if he was always like this. He generally lets prosecutors bully him into doing things their way. He is hopelessly out-of-date when it comes to modern technology, but this also applies to most of the cast. | ||
| + | **Miles Edgeworth: We are told many times that Edgeworth is a prosecutorial prodigy, but judging by what happens in court, he frequently fails to examine evidence or witness testimony before the trial. In the fourth case, the real killer manages to frame Edgeworth for murder. This is only possible because Edgeworth was gullible enough to join him on a midnight boat ride and then pick up the murder weapon after it was fired. Edgeworth probably ended up in a lot of windowless vans as a kid. | ||
| + | |||
| + | *Use Your Imagination, Lazyass: This game is the perfect example of this trope. Since it's a text-based game, the animation is pretty much limited to several facial expressions and gestures for each character, set against static backgrounds. Most of the "action" takes place offscreen while the other characters provide narration. The results are often hilariously inadequate, but the recappers use this to their advantage to make up their own scenarios. | ||

Summary
This game about gay lawyers represents many firsts for VGR: first DS game, first text adventure, first game based (loosely) on the legal system. On the surface, the plot revolves around Phoenix Wright, a defense attorney who works hard to get his clients declared innocent. In reality, this game is a gay soap opera, complete with courtroom innuendo.

Relationships
- Phoenix/Mia: This one is almost not worth mentioning because, come on, it's not like Phoenix is on board. But Mia flirts briefly with Phoenix before she dies, so out of pity for her, I figured I'd include this non-pairing.
- Phoenix/Edgeworth: Where to start? Phoenix and Edgeworth are childhood friends, professional rivals, and the two most attractive men in the game. If you don't think these two are fucking, you probably shouldn't be reading the recaps.
- Gumshoe/Edgeworth: Poor, poor Gumshoe. He clearly has the hots for Edgeworth, but his fuchsia-loving god doesn't return his affections. He is prone to verbally fellating Edgeworth in front of Phoenix, unaware that the two lawyers are screwing each other. Awkward!
- Grossberg/White: I didn't want to include this one, but since the game itself alludes to this more than once, I couldn't leave it out. Ew.
- Oldbag/Hammer: Also ew. Also canon (on her part).
- Oldbag/Edgeworth: See above.
- Phoenix/Larry/Edgeworth: Phoenix and Edgeworth both hook up with Larry while they're not fucking each other. Phoenix doesn't know Edgeworth and Larry are fucking. Larry is in denial that he's fucking either of them. It's complicated.
