He Could Be My Friend, If He Weren't My Enemy

Named after a really stupid quote from Guile regarding General Leo in Final Fantasy VI, this applies to any noble soul who happens to be on the evil side of the conflict. These professional, stately gentlemen (and they're almost always men) often end up switching sides, and truly becoming a friend instead of a frenemy.

Examples

  • Final Fantasy VI: Obviously, about General Leo. He thinks Kefka is crazy and reckless, like anyone with a brain does.
  • Grandia II: Millenia, the Wings of Valmar, is supposedly evil and dark and horrible, but she's pretty rad--way better than her stupid angelic body roommate.
  • Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Regarding Miles Edgeworth, demon prosecutor. "He could be my lover, if he weren't my enemy, and he totally is my lover anyway" would be more accurate here.
  • Suikoden II: General Kiba and his son Klaus are the only two non-asshole generals fighting for the Kingdom of Highland. Of course that means they eventually switch sides, because the Yaoi Army is forgiving if you are smart or hot, or hopefully both.
  • Suikoden III: Hugo hates the shit out of Chris, but thanks to the multiple viewpoints we know that a) she's not that bad, though she totally did kill Hugo's best friend, and b) they're totally going to be on the same side later.
