Again, lots of love and kudos to you Sam on these great recaps. I, too, remember that duality of both liking the story of this game and yelling at the screen about the stupid boat and random battles. Fun times! I also feel as though Elenor should be the recappers’ spirit animal. It seems apropros. Now for quotes, one from each recap.

    From Part 6:

“But if deck four is for giant droning bores, deck five is where all the freaks hang out. First, he finds that weirdo Reinhold, who has set up a training hall for lots of hot, sweaty sparring, but won’t let Marvy use it because he hasn’t yet recruited enough hot, sweaty men. Don’t worry, baldy, Marvy is way ahead of you there. Next, he wanders into a room at the other end of the hall, which is labeled the “Accessory Atelier.” Its proprietor is Lilin, and the idea is that she creates accessory items for Marvy out of raw materials he finds in his travels. But judging from the display cases around the room, it looks like she’s actually selling, at a premium markup, whatever random seashells and bird shit-encrusted rocks she finds while harvesting her breakfast seaweed. My first thought is that this should really be upstairs on the Boutiques deck, but maybe the other craftsmen were repulsed by the idea of sharing retail space with a fish lady hoarder.”

I’ll be honest here, it was the “shit-encusted rocks” part that really got me. I also loved the screencap referencing Shion, probably because I just reread the Xenosaga recap, which should be considered Sam’s magnum opus. It was right on the money, too.

    Now, for Part 7:

“Kika returns from Katarina’s bedside and says she will get word of their plight to Elenor for them, but that they should also pay her a visit in person. “What’s that?” Lido asks. “Are you saying you know Elenor? You could have told us earlier.” Dario basically did just tell him, but King Lido is too busy for petty bullshit like facts. But Kika also says, “Elenor…has her own problems to deal with.” Allow Krusty the Clown to foreshadow those problems: *glug glug* *vroom vroom* *thump thump*”

The set up and punchline here was just perfect. I also look forward to the inclusion of seafaring lesbian shenanigans with Kika to go along with Marvy’s gay shenanigans. 🙂

Glad you liked it. And I’m glad to hear the Xenosaga recap is mostly holding up? The sequel is on the docket so I probably need to do a reread myself.

If by holding up, you mean “hilarious in its haterade towards Shion,” then yes. If you speak of the plot making any kind of sense without a large amount of alcohol and self-bludgeoning, then mostly no. I do look forward to Xenosaga II, though, in the future.

I replayed II and III before doing any recording, just to refresh myself on them. I took notes and have a document that lays out the entire plot of the series and explains various plot points and character arcs for when I am inevitably confused about them while recapping. It is a sad piece of work.

  5. demidaemon

Wow. I mean, I am impressed that you did that. I think it may speak to the hot mess of convolution that Monolith Soft created.

    I think I am speechless.

I’ll also admit here that I started II ages ago and never got around to finishing it. Now I’ll have to finish the series so I can follow along with the recaps and be empathetic towards your suffering and sacrifice.

There are a lot of things I got wrong with the first game because I’d forgotten how it played out in later games (or even later in the first game), and though I am happy to endorse largely not giving a shit about the plot, because it’s stupid, it still annoyed me to realize I’d fucked up basic facts. So this is my effort to not do that this time.

  8. demidaemon

I actually thought you did a pretty good job keeping track of at least how things played out in the first game, personally. I can’t really speak to anything after that, though.

Another great recap, Sam, and another one where I can’t pick just one favorite part. Although, I am a bit disappointed you didn’t go for any hilarously homoerotic names for the ship and army. That was the part I was anticipating most. Honestly, the ship isn’t that hard to control once you realize that every island has invisible walls around it (sometimes around an area several times larger than the island itself) that force you to change direction if you hit them, and that you can only make port on an island from the south. Honestly, the only really bad part of sailing is that it is slow as molasses, even when holding down the button that makes the ship go faster, and the fact that everywhere is a million miles away from everywhere else.

On a more positive note, I’ve noticed that, except for Suikoden I, we’ve had a recap of every other Suikoden game in order. What could be next, I wonder?

  10. Lord-Derpface

Just as well I suppose. I haven’t played Suikoden V yet, and I would rather have played it before reading a recap of it. Don’t want to get spoiled. So I’m fine with waiting a while longer for the Suikoden V recap.

So, what IS next then? Got any plans for your next recap? Are the other recappers working on anything at the moment?

Also, I don’t know how you enjoy Ritapon so much. For me at least, that minigame is always pure hell, way worse than even The Game That Shall Not Be Named, which I was strangely lucky with in my most recent playthrough of Suikoden I (heck, in that one game of TGTSNBN required to advance the plot, that spaz Tai Ho threw his dice so hard they bounced right out of the bowl, resulting in an instant loss for him, not that I mean to brag or anything). To each their own though, I suppose.

  12. Lord-Derpface

Ooh, here’s a golden line though.

“Elenor says, ‘Marvy, let’s see if you’re a real leader. There are probably many here who would rather follow the king.’ A murmur fills the room, and Chiepoo immediately blurts out, ‘Are there?’ and makes me laugh out loud.”

What makes it even funnier is the totally awed, surprised, and skeptical way he says it, as if anyone wanting to follow King Lido instead of Marvy is such a completely ridiculous and outlandish concept to him that it never once even crossed his mind. And rightly so. That cat has a good, if not somewhat oversized, head on his shoulders.

It’s because you’re an annoying git, man, and you boss people around with passive-aggressive remarks (Oh, I was expecting THIS recap updated, but I GUESS it’s okay that THIS one was updated). You’re simply unlikable.

  14. Lord-Derpface

I’m sorry. It was never my intention to be rude or anything like that. I’m happy with and enjoy just about every recap on this site. When I say that I “expect” a certain game to be recapped next, it’s because there was something leading me to believe that it would be updated next. Like a few threads back, I asked if the recappers had anything specific planned next, and then they started talking about the FFX-2 recap and how hard it was to coordinate their playthroughs, since it’s a recap with multiple recappers working on it. So, naturally, I was expecting an FFX-2 recap next, and when the next recap was something else, I was surprised, but not in a bad “this isn’t what I was expecting, so it sucks” way.

I love this site, and I really want to try to get along with everyone here. If there’s something about my posts that rubs any of you the wrong way, please let me know so that I can attempt to not do it anymore.
