Born and Raised in Bumfuck Egypt

It's pretty standard fare in RPGs to have protagonists who hail from the tiniest and quietest of villages, and have always dreamed of seeing the wide world and having adventures. This also generally leads to everyone else in the game--chiefly the people who come from real cities--treating them like moronic bumpkins, which they almost always deserve.

Examples

  • Lunar: Silver Star Story: Alex, Gams, and Ram-It are from Burg, and the name says it all. Alex's soliloquy at the beginning of the game explicitly points out that he's from a tiny town and can't imagine the big adventures his hero Dragonmaster Dyne had, though Dyne was also from the same village.
  • Skies of Arcadia: Pirate Island apparently counts as a backwater, because Vyse and Pippi are laughably ignorant and have never gone anywhere.
  • Suikoden II: Barry, Jowy, and Nanami's hometown of Kyaro was actually the subject of a land dispute and all-out war between Highland and the City-State, but you wouldn't know it from their "Aw shucks, we're from little ol' Kyaro" routine.
